That comment sums up how I felt after I only recruited six people to my senior design group (a solar biodiesel hybrid that I’ve been involved with for 2+ yrs) and the “star students” announced that their project was going to be a self-balancing bicycle. The control system for a balancing bicycle is definitely an impressive project but what’s the point? If you’re going to spend an entire semester working on a complicated project why not work on one that works to solve (or in our case highlight) real world problems?
