Syria has been suspended from the Arab League. At an emergency meeting in Cairo Saturday, the Arab League agreed to expel Syria from the Arab League over the ongoing government crackdown on Syrian citizens.

On November 2, Syria agreed to a peace plan from the Arab League, which required President Assad to withdraw tanks and security forces from cities, begin talks with opposition members and release political prisoners (The Arab League estimates there are a staggering 70,000 political prisoners in Syria.)

One day after the Syrian government accepted the deal, dozens of civilians were killed in the city of Homs. Activists said an additional 19 people were killed by tank shelling in a nearby district.

The Arab League - suspending the country over its lack of progress towards the brokered peace deal - also agreed to impose economic and political sanctions.

More than 250 people have been killed in just the past 11 days in Syria, according to Human Rights Watch.

The UN says over 3,500 people have been killed in Syria since anti-government protests began in March.
